How Long Do Memorial Day Sales Last?
A big chunk of Memorial Day sales don't last beyond the holiday itself, which falls this year on Monday, May 26. But some retailers tend to extend the events for a couple of days after Memorial Day. A few sales in 2025 will linger through the end of the week — to May 31.
Memorial Day sales start by mid-May and can last until June.
A select few could go on through mid-June. For example, we saw Memorial Day sales hang around until late in the month in both 2023 and 2024. Even so, the vast majority won't last beyond May 26, or the first weekend in June at the latest.
Which Sales Should You Avoid?
While we believe you should at least take a look at any Memorial Day sales you're interested in, that doesn't mean they'll be worth shopping. Categories that will probably be part of the sales but may boast modest discounts at best include the following:
- Electronics
- Patio furniture
- Grills
- Pool items
You shouldn't ignore these categories entirely, as there could be hidden gems in various sales, but the savings on these items typically aren't as great as what we see later in the season. Even so, if you need some of these products for summer, saving a little something is still better than saving nothing.
What Did Memorial Day Sales Look Like in 2024?
In 2024, Memorial Day sales offered significant savings across a variety of categories, and we anticipate seeing similar trends in 2025. Major retailers participated with discounts on everything from apparel and home goods to appliances and outdoor equipment. Keep in mind that while the exact deals will differ, this should give you a good idea of what to look for. Based on last year, here's a more detailed breakdown of what shoppers could expect:
- Apparel, Shoes, and Accessories: This was consistently one of the strongest categories, with discounts often reaching up to 85% off. Look for retailers offering extra percentages off already reduced clearance items. For example, in 2024, J.Crew Factory offered an extra 50% to 60% off, plus another 25% off orders of $125 or more.
